Environmental team offers opportunities to help
With spring only a month away, thoughts of gardening, farming, fishing and other outdoor activities will soon weigh heavy on our minds. But to truly be able to enjoy Rhode Island’s special environment, we need to take action to protect it.
As the warmer days begin to melt the snow and ice, our area’s fragile waterways will receive a shock when the thawing ground finds its way into the urban storm drains, and then into the tributaries, streams, bays and coastal waters.
Because of this, Serve Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management have teamed up to identify and develop a wide range of local environmental volunteer opportunities.
Volunteers are needed to sign up for Serve Rhode Island’s Serve Corps Environmental Team.
A range of outdoor volunteer projects will be developed, including environmental monitoring, clean-ups, conservation and work to improve recreational access. Last October, for instance, AmeriCorps members removed tons of litter and trash from the Roger Williams Park Pond in Providence, thereby making the water and its surrounding areas cleaner and more inviting. Volunteers are currently needed to help with photo documentation of late winter-early spring nature trails throughout the state. This will be part of a seasonal “virtual hike” project available online allowing for greater access to Rhode Island’s natural environment. If you would like to become a member of the Serve Corps Environmental Team and receive a list of upcoming projects, contact the Volunteer Center at Serve Rhode Island at (401) 421-6547 or visit www.serverhodeisland.org for more information.
•The Audubon Environmental Education Center in Bristol will be holding its annual exhibit hall guide training sessions next week. The purpose is to train individuals to lead tours of the exhibits and trails at the center. A desire to learn about nature and meet interesting people is all that is required to participate in this training. Volunteers are needed for afternoon and weekend shifts as well as to assist at special events. The society is asking for an eight-hour commitment per month upon completion of the program. The seven-week, two-hour training session begins Saturday, Feb. 28 and continues on Thursdays and Saturdays. All sessions will be held at the Environmental Education Center. Contact Cathy Corey at (401) or e-mail ccorey@asri.org.
•The Jaycees of Kent County is now recruiting volunteers for its 12th annual Ecology Day Festival. Volunteers will assist the Jaycees with a variety of horticultural and clean-up activities, including planting flowers and shrubbery, spreading fresh mulch, watering planting beds and sprucing-up the area of the Jaycee Corridor and Arboretum and the portal entrance to the Sen. Donald Roch Riverwalk at the Riverpoint Community Park. A public remembrance will also take place for The Station Nightclub fire victims, and a military honor call will be conducted with area veterans who would like to participate. This year’s event will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 2. Contact Jack Lancellotta at (401) 828-9191 or e-mail wwjayceeskc@aol.com .

City Year CEO, Michael Brown, to Testify Before the Senate
City Year is a co-lead organizer of three national coalitions – ServiceNation, Voices for National Service, and America Forward – dedicated to passage of the Serve America Act, a bi-partisan bill introduced by Senators Kennedy and Hatch and strongly supported by President Obama. This act would expand service and social enterprise opportunities in America and focus the nation’s civic energies on addressing major national problems, including the high school drop out crisis.
Michael Brown, City Year, Inc, CEO and Co-Founder, was asked by Senator Kennedy, Senator Enzi and Senator Mikulski to testify before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on the Serve America Act and “The Next Generation of National Service."
