Kent County JAYCEES to present community cultural citizens awards

WEST WARWICK — The Jaycees of Kent County is hoping that its effort to celebrate the rich ethnic diversity within West Warwick will become an annual event.
On Sunday, the organization, formally known as the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce, will host the next in its series of community breakfasts, followed by a ceremony in which it will present its first community cultural citizens awards.
“We wanted to give recognition to people who’ve done outstanding work in their respective ethnic communities and give them acknowledgement,” said Robert Forcier, co-chairman of the award committee. The Jaycees is a leadership training program and the local chapter represents members throughout Kent County.
One representative from each of 10 different ethnic minorities will receive a reward, meant to acknowledge his or her work within the community and for their ethnicity, said John J. Lancellotta, executive director of the local chapter. Representatives from Irish, Italian, Spanish, Filipino, Native American, French, Polish, Scottish, Portuguese and Swedish communities will be on hand to receive awards.”
The honorees this year are James J. Day, Gloria Travaglione, Dr. Hugo Halo, the Narragansett Indian tribe, Gerard and Yvette Heroux, Shirley A. Mello, William Rogers and Astrid Drew. Town Council member Filomena Gustafson, who is also a co-chairperson for the awards, and School Committee member James Williamson will also receive awards.
“It’s a great privilege and honor to be recognized,” Williamson said yesterday. “My grandparents were from Scotland. It’d be great if they were alive to see this because I’m sure they’d really appreciate it.”
The Heritage Harbor Museum will also be honored for its commitment to sharing the history of Rhode Islanders and their industrial and ethnic history.
West Warwick isn’t the first place that comes to mind when one thinks of ethnic diversity, but according to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are a variety of ethnicities and ancestries represented by the people of West Warwick.
According to the 2000 Census, 22.7 percent of town residents identify their ancestry as Italian, 18.5 percent are French, 19.1 percent are Irish, and 11.9 percent are English. A number of census takers also identified themselves as Cape Verdean, Armenian, Dutch and Portuguese.
The event begins at 8:30 a.m. when attendees can have coffee while they browse a series of displays from each ethnic group. The displays depict the life and heritage of the represented groups and were shown at the West Warwick Public Library before moving to the lobby of Centerville Bank this week. On Sunday the displays will be moved to the Valley Country Club for the breakfast.
Each represented group will be given time to make a short presentation in the form of a speech, dance or other artistic interpretation, Lancellotta said. Tickets are $10, and can be obtained by calling the Jaycees at 828-9191.
